Tara, Ruth and I enjoyed our trip to Guatemala immensely.
The school complex is gorgeous. The school has grades 1-12 and a house for the missionaries and a couple of rooms for guests like us.
The town is very poor, less than a dollar a day poor, but beautiful as well.
The mountains are gorgeous.

We were tired but ready to explore the town. We were advised by the Scmidts to stay on the main road.

The people are very resourceful. They carry most everything on their backs.
The main road was fairly flat, but every other road to the homes was either straight up or straight down the mountain.
We were safe inside the complex which is locked and guarded.
Many of them are farmers, but to sell, not to eat themselves.

The kids are allowed to come in between 7:20 and 7:30. If they are not there, the gates close. It is helping them be more responsible.
We got to help in the ESL classes.
The kids were so cute. This little guy had lost his mother to cancer a couple of months ago. Another lost his mom when she fell off a truck going into town to sell food.
They give the kids a healthy snack made from their garden every day. They also teach the kids basic body care as well, like how to wash their hands, their faces, and brush their teeth.
This sweet little girl wanted to stay right with me. We enjoyed welcoming the kids to school.
Katelyn, Tara's daughter, was doing her internship here.
Ruth and I checked out the gardens. Very inventive in how they grow things on the mountain side.
On Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons, we gave some professional development sessions.
This man is the doctor for the clinic on campus.
All the teachers attended and were so sweet.
We took one evening, Wednesday, and went into Antigua which is a more tourist town.
We saw so many people dressed in traditional clothing and wearing baskets of all sizes on their heads.
They carry their babies too.
Antigua used to be the capital city but the volcanoes kept erupting and ruined the city.
We enjoyed the streets and shops. Finding lots of goodies to help us remember this trip.
More examples of the traditional clothing and the more modern clothing as well.
The people are so very welcoming too.
We enjoyed our evening of exploring but were very grateful for both Katelyn and Gretyl who came with us and helped us communicate!
We enjoyed a meal of traditional Guatemalan food. We also found out they leave the bones on their chicken!
The city has extra lights on the buildings up and down the main street to make it look so pretty at night.
I love how when you look out the front door from this angle, it looks like you will step off a ledge into the great unknown.
The teachers all attended our sessions and we gave them these t-shirts on the second day. They loved them.
They were so sweet.
I have learned so much and cannot wait to work on building a partnership for continued trips.
